You send me your pattern

I translate your knitting or crochet patterns from English into French, with the precision this kind of technical content demands. Fixed quote based on pattern length, delivery date confirmed when you place your order.

You publish patterns in English, and part of your audience knits or crochets in French, whether you're an independent designer or an established business with a full catalogue already.
Trust your English-to-French pattern translations to a professional, and give your French-speaking audience patterns they can follow without a second thought:
I draw on a specialized knitting/crochet corpus built up over years of translation work, on my professional expertise, and on my in-depth knowledge of these crafts.
From one pattern to the next, your terminology stays consistent across your entire catalogue.
I offer a proven translation process and a working relationship built on trust, communication, and our shared passion for the fiber arts.
Already have a French translation of your pattern, but you're not happy with the result, or you've had feedback about its quality? I also offer revision of existing translations, so your text lives up to the quality of your design work.

Based on the pattern's length tier, shown in the pricing table. A 30% deposit confirms your order and reserves your slot.
A complete, stitch-by-stitch translation, with the precision this kind of technical content demands, plus a report flagging points in the original pattern worth double-checking.
You receive the final translation and the quality report on the source pattern, on the agreed date. The balance is paid on delivery.
Translating a pattern means reading it extremely closely. I use that close reading to flag anything in the original pattern that deserves a second look: ambiguous technical terms, stitch counts that contradict each other, possible mix-ups between US and UK crochet terminology.
You receive this report along with the translation, even when everything checks out: it's a record of what I verified in your original pattern.
For a revision, the same principle applies to the existing translation: the report delivered with your corrected file details the differences between the original and revised versions, as well as the errors found in the original translation.
This report is a linguistic check only, not technical editing (“tech editing”): stitch counts, grading between sizes, and the pattern's technical schematics are not part of it.
I translate your entire pattern from English into French: everything it contains, from the introduction to the finishing instructions, including notes, stitch guides and abbreviation lists. You get a French pattern your customers can follow as if it had been written in French from the start.
Fixed prices based on the pattern's length, counted excluding numbers and size charts. Agreed before we begin, no surprises on delivery. Every tier includes the pattern's complete translation and its quality report.
Does your pattern already exist in French? I revise that version: I improve its style, harmonize the terminology and correct any errors. If you send me the English original, I can refer to it whenever something is unclear. You get a reliable, refined French version.

I specialize in the creative arts, knitting and crochet in particular, because I'm passionate about them myself: I knit and crochet, which lets me understand your patterns from the inside, not just on paper.
Velaine Studio is an extension of my broader work as a professional translator in other fields (translationspirit.com). Here, I offer a service aimed directly at knitting and crochet pattern designers, with its own dedicated ordering process. I'm also the creator of Rowtine, a free Android app for knitting and crochet that I develop as a personal project close to my heart, and which I'm glad to offer to the international community of knitters and crocheters.

A technical English-to-French translator since 2018, I've translated, revised, or written nearly 4 million words over the past eight years. I hold a Master's degree in English-to-French technical translation.
A PDF, a .docx (Word) or .odt (LibreOffice
Writer) file, a .pptx (PowerPoint) or .odp
(LibreOffice Impress) file, whichever format you sell it in. The price is
estimated automatically as soon as you upload it. Older binary formats,
.doc and .ppt (Word/PowerPoint 97-2003), as well as
.indd/.idml (InDesign), are accepted but without an
automatic estimate for now: I'll send you a quote by email. Other formats can
be supported on request. You get your translation back in the same format as
your original file.
It depends on the pattern's length and my schedule: the process can take a little while, thank you for your understanding. For a fixed price (per the pricing table), the delivery date is confirmed promptly, once the deposit is paid, which validates your order. For a custom quote (several patterns, a full catalogue, or a batch revision), the date comes with the quote, before any payment. Need it urgently? Mention it in the notes field on the form.
No. It's a list of points worth double-checking in the original pattern, on top of the translation itself. Useful, but it's not a complete technical audit of the original pattern.
No. A tech editor checks stitch counts, grading between sizes, technical schematics, and the mathematical consistency of the original pattern: that is a separate profession. Velaine Studio translates and revises the pattern's language, not these technical aspects.
These are two incompatible terminology systems: “double crochet” refers to different stitches depending on which one is used. Please specify the system used in your pattern; otherwise I'll ask before translating.
Your files are used only for the service requested and are never shared with anyone else. A file uploaded just for a price estimate is deleted immediately after analysis. A pattern submitted for an order is kept for the duration of the work, then according to the retention periods detailed in our privacy policy.
After you place your order, I confirm the exact price and delivery date. The 30% deposit is paid by card via PayPal (with or without a PayPal account). The balance, on delivery, is paid by bank transfer or card, via a payment request sent by email.
Yes. Choose “quote” in the form and specify the volume (number of patterns, full catalogue, etc.) in the notes: a group rate is worked out case by case, based on volume and timeline.
Yes. If a French translation of your pattern already exists but doesn't satisfy you, I revise it rather than starting from scratch: you gain quality without paying for a full translation. Pricing follows the same length tiers as translation (see “Revision pricing”).
