Terms and conditions

Any order placed on this site implies acceptance of these terms.

1. Nature of the service

Technical translation of knitting and crochet patterns from English into French, carried out personally by Alexia Olona, accompanied by a quality report flagging the points to check in the source pattern (ambiguous terms, inconsistent stitch counts, missing US/UK specification). Velaine Studio also offers the revision of an existing French translation, with a report of the differences and errors found in the original version (see articles 5 and 6). These services are obligations of means and of quality, carried out with the professional care expected of a specialized technical translator.

2. Quote and order

The price is fixed and determined according to the length tier of the pattern or of the translation to be revised (translation and revision pricing tables published on the site), or set by an individual quote beyond 6,000 words, for several patterns or translations, a full catalogue, or at the request of a business. The order is placed via the site's form, specifying the requested service (translation or revision); it implies acceptance of the stated price.

3. Deposit and payment

A deposit of 30% of the total amount is due at the time of ordering to reserve the service slot; the service does not begin until the deposit has been received. The deposit is paid by card via PayPal (with or without a PayPal account) upon order confirmation for orders placed without a quote, and after the quote is accepted for orders placed via a quote. The balance is invoiced on delivery and paid by bank transfer or by card, following a payment request sent by email.

4. Delivery timeline

The delivery date is confirmed after the order or after the quote is accepted. This timeline is indicative and depends on the length of the pattern or of the translation to be revised, and on the current schedule; it may be revised if the order is not confirmed (deposit paid) promptly after the quote is sent.

5. Obligations of the translator

Alexia Olona undertakes to deliver a faithful translation, proofread and checked before sending, free of translation errors. The quality report covers objectively verifiable points in the source pattern (consistency of stitch counts, terminological accuracy, US/UK system); it does not guarantee the absence of all ambiguity in a source pattern whose text is of insufficient quality. As the delivered translation is not intended to be proofread by a non-French-speaking client, no additional third-party proofreading of the translation's substance is provided. The guarantee covers the absence of errors, not a back-and-forth revision phase: a confirmed error is corrected under the conditions of article 6.

For a revision, Alexia Olona undertakes to deliver a corrected French translation, faithful and checked before sending, accompanied by a report of the differences between the original version and the revised version as well as the errors found in the starting translation. The quality of the revision depends on that of the original English pattern when it is provided, to resolve ambiguous cases; in its absence, the revision relies solely on the internal consistency of the submitted translation.

6. Correction of a translation or revision error

Any translation error found after delivery is corrected free of charge, and a corrected file is delivered, for six months from the date of delivery. It does not matter who reports it: the client, a person knitting the pattern, or the translator herself.

The following constitutes an error: a stitch, an abbreviation, a count, or an instruction whose translation does not match the source pattern, or a French instruction that cannot be carried out as written.

The following does not constitute an error: an accurate wording that a reader would have phrased differently. A preference of this kind does not give rise to a correction; it is noted as the client's own terminology choice and applied to their subsequent translations.

Any revision error found after delivery is corrected free of charge, under the same conditions and within the same six-month period.

7. Obligations of the client

The client undertakes to provide a complete and legible pattern, in one of the accepted formats, and to indicate the stitch system (US/UK) if necessary. Where diagrams or images contain text, the client provides these elements in an editable version: text embedded in a flattened image cannot be translated. The client has 7 business days from receipt of delivery to report any objective non-conformity (wrong file, incorrect format, incomplete delivery); after this period, the delivery is deemed compliant.

8. Confidentiality

Files submitted are used only for the requested service and are not shared with any third party. The file submitted for an automatic price estimate is deleted immediately after analysis (see the privacy policy).

9. Intellectual property

The client guarantees that they hold the necessary rights to the source pattern submitted for translation or revision. The delivered translation or revision is transferred to the client upon full payment (deposit and balance). Alexia Olona retains the right to reuse, for the purposes of quality and terminological consistency, the knitting/crochet vocabulary corpus that she builds up over the course of her translations, without ever republishing or redistributing the content of a pattern itself.

10. Liability

Alexia Olona's liability is limited to the total amount of the order concerned. She cannot be held liable for inconsistencies specific to the source pattern, nor for the indirect consequences of a delivery delay. The service is a linguistic translation and revision; it does not include technical editing of the pattern ("tech editing": stitch counts, grading between sizes, technical schematics), which remains the responsibility of the client or of the original designer.

11. Cancellation

In the event of cancellation after the service has begun, the deposit remains non-refundable. If the service is already completed at the time of cancellation, the balance remains due in full.

12. Applicable law

These terms are governed by French law. Any dispute falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the French courts.
